Virginia State Fox Hunters Ass’n

Virginia State Fox Hunters Ass’n

Our 90th Annual Field Trial and Bench Show was held at Poole’s Fox and Hound Training Preserve on October 5-9, 2011. The running this year was very sporadic and not as good as in past years, but we still had a good hunt. On Wednesday we entered 483 hounds. Our numbers were down this year from 667 last year, but with the economy the way it has been, we felt very fortunate to have the members and hounds present this year.

On Wednesday evening, we had a delicious cookout prepared by Dennis “Big D” Stanley that everyone enjoyed prior to the Bench Show. Our Bench Show Judge was Will Rutherford of Virginia and Ringmaster was Craig Nobles from North Carolina. At the end of the evening, Ch. (b) Windsor’s Diamond, owned by Melissa Windsor of Sleepy Hollow Kennels, Upper Marlboro, MD was crowned Best in Show. Best Opposite Sex was East Coast Crown, owned by East Coast Kennels, Hookerton, NC. Congratulations to both our winners!

Bright and early on Thursday morning we began our casting of the hounds. Hunters and hounds alike we were anxious to get the show on the road. Things went pretty smoothly all three days of casting and running. On Friday we held our Business Meeting and acknowledged our good friend Dennis Cosner to whom our program was dedicated.

We also elected new officers for the coming year: President, Louis Callahan; First Vice-President, Paige Brannan; and Second Vice-President, Haynie Hite. We would like to thank Paige for his two years of service. Then we turned the meeting over to our Master of Hounds Pete Warren of North Carolina for the Derby awards. Everyone was anxious to see who had won and finally Farmer’s Lil John, owned by Roy and Rose Farmer, Moon, VA was crowned winner of the 2011 Derby. Congratulations!

Saturday morning bright and early our cast began for the final day of running. Did I say that we had three beautiful days with no rain? At the end of the hunt, people were anxious to find out who the winner was and head home to rest before going back to work on Monday. Hammertime Pure Nitro, owned by Purdy Bo Kennels, Emporia, VA, was crowned the winner. Congratulations!

HH-01-12-VSFHA-01At this time I would like to say “thank you” to the following people who contributed to making our hunt a success this year: Master of Hounds Pete Warren, Assistant Master of Hounds Donnie Adams, Bench Show Judge Will Rutherford, Ringmaster Craig Nobles, and Judges: Kelly Meadows, Jerry Towler, Mike Fleming, Walter Lee Haney, Donnie Hall, Trent Mills, Jerry Kinker, Howard Stanley, Paul Jackson, Jack Jackson, Ben Slayton, Andy Wickham, R. D. Bolt, James Booker, Glenn Brannich, Derek Doss, Derek Doss, Jr., Dick Jones, Charles McCoy, Pete Brown, Tommy Carter, William Easter and Mike Smith.

Thanks also to Billy Poole, Nancy Tyler and the ladies in the kitchen who provided breakfast and lunch for our judges; Dennis Stanley, Paul Isbell and Specialty Feeds for the donation of watches for first place winners in Derby and All-Age; Jennifer Hackett and Quick Track for providing tracking collars for our money raising event; Chris Wright for running this event and the 50/50 cash event; Roy Neighbors for assisting with obtaining feed from Pride, Hi-Tek, John Allen of Black Gold, Sunshine Mills, Bartlett Milling, Sonny’s Pride and Joel Gilman of Showtime. We really do appreciate your donations to our hunt.

HH-01-12-VSFHA-02Last, but not least, you, the hunters, who continually turn out to support our hunt. You are the backbone of our organization and we really do appreciate your continued support!
