2012 Mississippi State Fox Hunt
The 2012 Mississippi State Three Day Field Trial was held at the Fox Hunters Preserve on Grenada Lake near Coffeeville, MS, March 8-10. This hunt was one of the more outstanding we have had in several years. There was plenty of game and lots of good running over the whole three days. We had some wind for the first couple of days of the hunt, but the judges did a great job of covering the running. Our turnout this year totaled 205 hounds entered with 87 Derby and 118 All-Age hounds.
We want to thank the officers and directors of the Fox Hunters Preserve for providing an outstanding kennel and office area for our use during the hunt. Local hunts such as ours would not be possible without the hard work of this group of dedicated sportsmen. We also need to thank all the hunters who came out to support our hunt again this year. We were fortunate to have a great group of judges working to stay on top of the hounds. Thanks to our judges: Ken Ezell, Galen Gray, Bo Ellis, Bub Long, Scott Freely, Billy McDaniel, Paul Isbell, Wilbert Mason, Johnny Renfro, Donnie Blakely, Larry Etheridge, David Simpson, Larry Champion, Alton Strider, and our Master of Hounds, Bud McGregor. Also big thanks go to our Bench Show Judge Larry Etheridge, assisted by Ken Ezell, who worked through the classes of hounds on Wednesday evening. Special thanks go to Mr. and Mrs. M.K. Stegall for assisting with the hunt. A special thanks to Lisa Long for taking pictures of our winners and assisting on the reports.
The first morning’s cast was from the “horse park” down the west dead end road. Hounds found game and running was excellent. The second day’s cast was from “Y” down the west dead end road. This cast also provided great running with hounds going long range later in the morning. On the third day hounds were walked through at Skuna-Turkey and cast toward the cemetery. Once again there were several fox and coyote races reported early with hounds headed out of the area later in the morning. Throughout the entire hunt, there were some outstanding coyote and fox races covered by the judges. The Master of Hounds worked hard keeping judges on top of running and all the judges responded with outstanding effort to score the hounds.
President M.K. Stegall called the annual business meeting of the Mississippi State Fox Hunters Association to order on Friday morning. Routine business was covered and the present slate of officers was voted to serve for another year. A card was signed by hunters to send Robby Bouge who was unable to attend due to illness this year. We all wish Robby a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing him back at the hunts soon.
During the awards ceremony on both days, our award sponsors were recognized. We appreciate the support of Mr. Paul Isbell with Specialty Feeds for our field trial kit and donated feed. Our other sponsors included Sunshine Feeds, Quick Track, Collar Clinic, and Johnson’s Telemetry.
Our Derby and Combination winner was Watt’s Red Tail, owned by Pepper Watts of Bull Mountain Kennels, Vardaman, MS.
In the All-Age division, it was Clark Milling from Decatur, MS with FM’s Baby Baily that came out on top. The Combination and Dual Champion honors went to Stamper’s Razor, owned by Eddie Stamper of Decatur, MS. We were unable to get pictures of all our winners as several hounds were out of pocket following the awards ceremony. Congratulations to all our winners and we look forward to seeing you at the lake next year.
